I Dream of Johnny by Juliet Madison

Reviewed by Maria

A short but sweet read by Australian author Juliet Madison, pure, absolute fun.  Maggie, a creative young woman whose business is not doing well, get's a chance of three wishes on a touchscreen lamp, with the help of a virtual genie.

Ever heard the adage 'be careful what you wish for because it might come true'?  One of Maggie's wishes is for unlimited funds and the other is for a house which never needs to be cleaned.  And the third is for a handsome man to become her other half.  A Greek god, no less. Someone who will make her former boyfriend extremely jealous and insecure.   Except, she types in the wrong word and instead of  'Greek', she types 'geek'.  That's when the fun really begins.

Of course it's not much fun for Maggie.  She has this man living in her house who totally adores her and who knows everything that there is to know about computers, technology, you name it.  No doubt, that could come in useful at times.  But he needs her so totally.  She can't leave him for a second because human wishes are a huge responsibility.  He adores her, but has no experience of actual life.  He can only ever wear one outfit, the one he arrived in. Can you imagine the problems she faces now?  The singles world looks like Paradise in comparison.

And yet....and yet....she can't say he isn't really sweet in a way.  If it wasn't for all that factual, technical jargon, he isn't bad looking even if he does have horrible dress sense.  The only option is to return the wish and get another one.  But does she have the heart to do the deed?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, a forthcoming release from Escape Publishing.  I recommend it to readers who like their fiction a little different.

Once Upon a Twist by Michelle Smart & Aimèe Duffy

Reviewed by Desere

This was a totally fabulous little read from two great authors. Taking the world of fairy tales and fantasy and serving it up with a large dose of kick ass heroines that do not faint in the face of danger and can fight with the best of them. The authors gave a whole new meaning to the words "I will fight for my happy ever after".

Cinderella in Combat Boots

We meet a version of Cinderella like no other.Yes she is still the same mistreated and abused woman from the original fairy tale, but she is smart and no mere weakling as she can stare into the eyes of evil and slash off it's head in seconds, unlike the original version that was simply a weak woman in need of a Prince to save her.

And Price Charming is much more than a charmer, he is like the original strong confident and ready to protect his beloved but the difference with this version is that the man is as more of a man on all levels than the original Price that simply comes in and "saves" the woman with the glass slippers.

I loved that the author really focused on both characters instead of like in the original read we got more about Cinderella and her life and only a very tiny glimpse into who and what the Prince it. I adored the kick-ass attitude of Cinderella and that the author also incorporated other fairy tale elements such as references to Goldilocks and the three bears and the witch from Hansel and Gretel.

The sexual level was of this read was of the over before it really starts kind but enough to give you the wild and crazy emotion of heat between the characters, and added a very nice spice to the read . The author did a terrific job of taking a old tale blending in some action and giving me as reader a entertaining read that had me laughing out loud and on the edge of my seat to see what comes next!

And Michelle I totally adore those glass slippers I must have a pair!

"Price Charming can fight but his darling Cinderella can kick some serious ass"

Reunited with Red

In this version of Little Red Riding Hood we meet Ruby, she had to walk away from the love of her life and in the process all but turned her back on her only living family, her grandmother. Walking away from Jeremy however was the hardest thing she has ever done and it has left her weak, scarred and not so much loving herself.

When he grandmother sends word she is ill, Ruby embarks upon the trip back to a world she never thought she would go as there is the risk of running into Jeremy and her heart just cannot stand it. But the wolf in this tale is no ordinary wolf and Jeremy is the only one that can save her.

I liked that the author gave the old tale a new twist with the wolf being much worse than in the fairy tale. It gave the words "What hides in the deep dark forest is never to be spoken of " a whole new meaning, as the read was all about covering up a secret that not only destroyed Ruby and Jeremy's relationship but also brings them back together.

The character of Jeremy was terrific , he is definitely so much more than just a "woodcutter", he is the ultimate hero in doing everything to protect his secrets in order to not let the love of his life be hurt. I loved that the author also takes Ruby and makes her so much stronger to face what needs to be done in the name of love, showing the scarred running away from it all woman is no more and is ready to take on the worst of the worst.

The sexual level of this read was hot, sensual and blazing! Classic Aimèe Duffy and let the full emotions of the characters be bared to me as reader. I adored the moment of truth being revealed and felt myself tearing up as Jeremy bares his soul.

I was entertained at all times and could not wait to see what happens, close to the end the author actually had me holding my breath to see who lives and who dies!

Aimèe you must write us more Jeremy's !

"Seeing red has nothing to do with blushing, but all to do with passion and the blood it can let flow"

Take a couple of traditional fairy tales, such as Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood, a pair of innovative romance authors, a dollop of paranormal and heaps of attitude not too mention two kick ass heroines and what have you got?  ONCE UPON A TWIST, that's what.

ONCE UPON A TWIST by Aimee Duffy and Michelle Smart is a two-in-one, two novellas in one volume, each one giving us a traditional fairy tale with a modern twist.  As these fairy tales were always out of the realm of fantasy anyway, the paranormal aspect is accentuated.  Our heroines are not the fairy princess types for sure, they're modern, kick ass women.  Don't mess with them whatever you do.  In fact, they fairly leave Prince Charming and the Woodcutter in the shade.

So if you enjoy fairy tales and fantasy stories and would like to see them get a bit of modern treatment, pick this one up, satisfaction guaranteed.

Most actresses reach a point where their career starts to drag and to make the big comeback they need to pull off the role of a lifetime. But unlike going from playing "innocent" roles to "big girl" roles as some do, I bet you would never think that plating the role of a scientist could land you imprisoned in jail, your brain implanted by a octopus or finding the alien of your dreams! Yes, your read it right alien of your dreams!

However, this is is one mind bending situation that Ashley is determined to find her way out of. And when out of this world sexy and all kinds of alien hot, please-invade-my-mind-now, alien research director ZXQ or Sam as Ashley chooses to name him, proves he is willing to do anything to help her and others get back to earth no matter what it takes, she is reluctant to trust him but soon realises she has not choice.

The main characters of Sam and Ashley were both very well written and the author created two people worlds apart from each other yet the same on so many levels. Ashley is strong and determined yet she has also been hurt before and has build a wall around her heart and mind. This made me at first think "Oh no not a weak female and on a planet like this, she is doomed". But the author soon lets her unfold and shows that Ashley is one tough cookie ready to fight of anything.

Sam is a character bordering on the edge of insanity, as he soon realizes that bringing the humans to the cosmos was his biggest mistake ever. But he is also strong willed and dead set on getting them all back to safety. What I liked about him was that as the book unfolded he got more and more into touch with the man he truly is. When his explosive secret is revealed, for me as reader it was the "Yes, I love this author",moment and the book became a truly rocking read!

The backdrop setting was truly magical as the author described the surrounding in vivid detail bringing to life a entire new world unlike the human mind can envision, and therefore proves that this author truly has the gift.

The dialogue was action packed and emotional. Combining the world as we know it with a world of hurt and empowerment. I can say that if your not good at remembering specifics when it comes to rules and terms used with regards to what aliens call humans or what the octopus is, then you will more than once find yourself a little lost in this read, and you might need to page back to get back onto track.

But all in all this read was truly spectacular! I truly loved how the author took a complete new world with new possibilities and let it all blend into a mesmerizing, captivating world of danger and showing trust is the ultimate reason for love when you find right person.

The sensual level of this one was off the charts, the heat and unexplained feelings of Sam as he feels for the first time when mind-linking with Ashley was such a interesting and fresh approach from the author that all I can say is ladies this is the man you would want in your bed, he knows what you need before you even finish the thought.

I highly recommend this read for those who need their fix of paranormal fix intertwined with romance and suspense.

Lost In The Seven Worlds by Petronela Ungureanu

This is a short but sweet work of fantasy by a novelist of Rumanian origin, Petronela Ungureanu.  Sometimes I find myself a little wary of fantasy novels because they either have to be done really well, or not at all.  Some fantasy novels are just a smokescreen for a mindless erotica fest. This book is no such thing.  I think that this one has merit and is an enjoyable reading experience.  The author has a voice which is engaging and compelling - you keep wanting to read more.

The main character is a teenage girl who was taken away from her earthly life and is now moving on the heavenly plane.  Far from being flimsy and ethereal beings, the creatures of the mysterious world - worlds rather - in which he is now moving - are as enigmatic and vibrant as in the human world, with various injustices and problems to cope with.  The main character misses her home in her world, but is unable to return and therefore has to cope with the predicament in which she now finds herself.  Somehow, she finds herself in love with someone special and when love seems to have come within her grasp, it is mysteriously snatched away.  And one wonders.  Is this the end of hope?  Or is it a mere test?  Some obstacle to be overcome?

The novelette stops at an in intriguing point in the story and one rather hopes that this is not so much a stand alone story as a prequel to a longer, more detailed one.  I would love to read more and discover this mysterious and heavenly world.  I hope the author is inspired to write more of this world so I can learn more about the fate of this young, vulnerable heroine.  I would like her to be found eventually, instead of being lost in the seven worlds.

FISH OUT OF WATER is an Escape Publishing release for April 2013 by author Ros Baxter.

Rania Aqualina is a Deputy Sheriff and fights crime yet no one would be able to say that in reality she is a mermaid. She has to go to her mermaid world and sort out some criminals now. Would she be successful? Who was after her life? Who wanted to kill her?

FISH OUT OF WATER is a unique fantasy story. Rania Aqualina is like a human spark; witty, strong and full of determination, I loved her from the word go. I also adored the way she made the hero, Carragheen bristle. This lady is sassy with a capital S and mistress of the withering put down remark - I would so like to be more like her. Author Ros Baxter wrote this story with such realistic imaginary that we are in there with Rania all the way.

Remember the movie Splash, we got a romantic tale of a mermaid meeting the human man of her dreams and got a taste at things being out of the ordinary. But I am sure all will agree in the end we loved it and as I would watch it again and again.

In this new Ros Baxter read it is the same I will re-read this one over and over and be in awe every time. I totally loved the imaginary world of fantasy meets "reality".

I was in awe of how the author let her words of fantasy be so real that it seemed almost that the world she created was real. I hung onto each and very word from the start go.

The author took me off to a world of pure fantasy at it's best, I could feel each and every emotion of the characters and could touch the excitement as it bubbled to a furious burst of a fun and fresh new outlook on the fantasy world.

The back drop setting and dialogue was delightfully addictive. What I especially adored was that Rania was a real kick ass heroine, she took on the most dangerous of situations and never once blinked an eye in the face of danger!

I also got a fantastic glimpse into some great secondary characters that I am truly hoping will get their own stories.

I highly recommend this read for anyone who loves reading books where fantasy can become reality in the mind of the reader. You will not be disappointed go get a copy NOW!

Soul Stealer by Anna Hackett

Soul Stealer (The Anomaly Trilogy #3)

I am sure everyone out that has heard about woman being kidnapped and forced to do terrible thins, but take a moment to and try to step into the shoes of those woman. Alone, away from everything you know and love and being forced to do the most unspeakable of things, and worse there is no way out!

In Soul Stealer by the incredibly talented Anna Hackett I got to see not only the world behind that kind of situation, I got to see the paranormal side of it. Yes, you read it right, the paranormal side.

Cate was kidnapped and not only trained to kill but forced for you see deep down inside there is a kinder soul. But what is worse very soon that implemented and trained action becomes an addiction. She steal souls for the crime lord that kidnapped her, and she cannot seem to stop no matter how hard she tries. How's that for book opening?

Incredible that's what! The characters of Cate and the Dr. Gage that is the man determined on saving her, were both so powerful that I was bombarded with a series of emotions that is very hard to describe.

Yes I have read this authors books before and I always enjoy them, yet this time it is not only enjoyment that came to mind, I was truly in awe as it was if the author packed more emotion in this time. It all felt so very real even with all the soul stealing going on that was the kicker to remind me as reader this is actually a paranormal related read.

The elements of danger, suspense, romance and good vs evil were absolutely brilliantly depicted it was truly not only a delight to read but definitely one of the very best reads of 2013 and for sure it will go straight to number one in the paranormal reading charts!

" Stealing souls can be sexy"

Review by TashNz

Having read maybe two paranormal's - ever - I have to say that after reading Soul Stealer by Anna Hackett, if they're all like this, I've got a new favourite genre!

Read in one sitting, I loved the fast paced, pull no punches action that each page contained. Soul Stealer is full of twists and turns that I didnt see coming. My heart is still racing as I write this!

Cate was your typical mango smoothie loving, macadamia nut eating school teacher from Melbourne until she's kidnapped and tortured by Laven and turned into a Soul Stealer. We meet her when she's in a detox of sorts; she doesn't want to be a killer and is at Haven to be cured of her addiction to stealing souls.  Laven wants Cate back tho and sends his men to get her back from Haven.  It's Dr Gage's job to cure Cate and they become close, the lines are blurred  from Dr/Patient relationship as they fight their attraction for each other.  Together they're taken on a heart-stopping, race against time to save Cate from Laven.

Soul Stealer is the third novella in the Anomaly trilogy. The first two are now on the top of my TBR list.

Perfect novella for anyone whose New Years Resolution is to read something different.

The Dream Jumper's Promise by Kim Hornsby

The Dream Jumper's Promise

A fantasy romance paranormal read that kept me on the edge of my seat with mystery, suspense and loads of action - filled twists and turns so good that I could not figure out what would happen next and how it would come to an end. And that my dear reader friends is a excellent sign that this book was a fantastic read.

As most times with a mystery filled book I always manage to solve the hidden secrets before they are fully exposed, but with this one I could not get it right, every time I thought "By Joe I got it!" I was quickly thrown of track and surprised with a whole new outcome.

The book is about Tina a woman that finds it understandably very hard to get over the death of her husband, but from the depths of her sorrow she pulls herself together and decides saving her diving shop will keep her not only from not focusing on her loss but also will save her business. So she sets to work but unexpectedly she finds herself with the help of two men, one her dead husband's best friend and the other her ex. Both men want to help her but when one reveals that he has a ability to enter dreams and therefore could just maybe solve her husband's murder the race to solve a mystery and keep their heads above water is on!

And what a race it was, I was completely sucked in by this one. The author blew my senses with mystery, romance and secrets so deep, dark and dangerous that it this read was a movie it surly would have walked away with every award out there!

The fact that the author added in a person that can enter dreams made this read so much more fascinating as it showed me a side of paranormal that I have found not fully explored as of yet, read about yes, but this author packed a whole lot more into it and what it's outcome positive or negative can be.

The characters were all really well written and for the most part I found myself thinking "What is people like this in this situation really existed, how intriguing life would be!" It truly kept me on the edge of my seat, it is not every book that can offer you a traitor, a dream entity, a murderer and a romance all in one!

The backdrop setting of Maui was perfect, it gave the mystery of the depths of the ocean and what lies beneath to me as reader but also let me relax as the author's descriptions of the islands were truly magical.

The dialogue was one of good quality as it fell perfectly into place with the plot and was also very well thought out, and I say this because some books dialogue is good but some lacks that connection to the plot and it's characters that makes you go wow!

This read was perfectly balanced and the author achieved the thin line of romance combined with the paranormal world to great perfection! A compelling and magical read!

Highly recommend

Winter Fusion by Anna Hackett

This was a terrific read, paranormal perfectly fused with romance! The story focused on Savan a tough as hell negotiator out to save his planet coming face to face with Brinn the "ice queen" herself, and this time she will make sure he pays for denying her request years before,a request that could have saved the life of her father.

The characters were incredible, strong, independent, ready to fight to get what is needed to protect the ones they stand for,and hopelessly attracted to each other.

And so the  incredible tale starts. They come under attack, they fight, they run from enemies and they fall deeper and deeper for each other in truly spectacular fashion. The book was all action from start to finish and I could not stop reading ,had be glued to the edge of my seat.

The author gave me as reader a very detailed and clear insight into a future which could very well be ours one day. I could very clearly and easily take the descriptions and form a mental image so vivid that for me as reader it was as if I could actually see and touch the "world" being depicted by the author.

The story of enemies becoming lovers has never been written like this, passionate, filled with overwhelming emotion and if  I may say so loads of guts from both characters, which totally rocked!

I loved the hate-love dialogue with the characters going from "I seriously hate your guts" to "I can't get enough of you" moments, and this is what gave the book that extra spice and sizzle.

Not everyone is a fan of paranormal and not everyone is a fan of romance, but this book my friends will melt any doubts you have and fuse you to this authors books for the rest of your life!

As the Anomalies band together to rescue Cate, one of their number who has been kidnapped by master criminal Gabriel Levin to empower him to do eve more evil, Mara and Cal have to work out thier differences.  I have to say that the love scenes are pretty hot and are written in the language of erotica.  So don't say you weren't warned.

A short but immensely satisfying read, it held my interest all though.

Time Thief (The Anomaly Trilogy)

TIME THIEF by author Anna Hackett is a fantasy novel released in August 2012.

Bay North was an ordinary girl who later finds out that by freak of nature and genetic mutation she could steal time. She tried her hand at stealing time by freezing it in her teens. Later she told her parents and they explained to her the proper moral obligations of using her gift. But a criminal, Gabriel Leven, was after her gift for his criminal activities. She came home one day to see all her family members murdered and her baby sister being sliced open by the criminal's wife. Bay swore revenge.

Sean Archer lost his team of elite soldiers in Afghanistan. He was a Seal but he sold himself out to Leven so he could get to Time Thieves and take vengeance for his lost team of Seals.

Yet he finds out that Leven had misled him and wanted to kill him now. So he joins Bay to take revenge on Leven. But staying together, fighting each other and now fighting together they can't deny the attraction they feel toward each other.

Though the concept of Time Thief is freezing of time which is not new, yet the unique twist the author Anna Hackett gives to her story is interesting to read. The sensuality in the love scenes is scorching hot. Yet the relationship and trust issue depicted in this story is realistic. This is a fantasy story highly worth reading!

A short but immensely satisfying read which kept me absorbed.

Bay has a supernatural power she was born with. She can hold time still for short periods while remaining mobile herself. This is an ideal skill for a person who earns their bread by committing crimes.

Bay commits crimes, but not to enrich herself. She only steals or attacks one person and never profits by her crimes. The object of her hatred is the criminal boss, Gabriel Levin, who murdered her family and pursues her in order to misuse her power. Her entire life is focussed on getting revenge on Levin, even if she dies in the attempt.

When she meets and falls for Sean Archer, an ex Navy Seal who has been hurt by the same criminal, Bay learns that there is more to life than seeking revenge. Will the healing power of love work it's magic for her? The only way to find out is to read the story. This has a touch of paranormal and more than a hint of sci-fi. I loved the contemporary feel. Bay's unusual power added a thrilling dimension to the story.

And I can't wait to read parts 2 and 3 of the Anomaly Trilogy, of which this novella was a part.

Daughter of the Dark: Book Two of the Shadow Through Time Trilogy

DAUGHTER OF THE DARK is the second book from author Louise Cusack in the SHADOW THROUGH TIME trilogy.

Princess Khatrene was married to the Dark and gave birth to his child. But as expected it is not a son but a daughter. The evil nature of the Dark forced Khatrene to run away from him and he is after his wife to torture her more and his child. She is saved from the Dark's clutches by her Champion, Tallis.

Tallis is in love with her and will do anything for her safety. To save the child, Talli's cousin, Pagan, another guardian takes the child to Magoria- our earth.

Coming out of a lake with a child in his arms he meets Sarah, who takes them in though she knows they are alien beings. The child is named Glimmer.

Glimmer growns up with extra ordinary powers. For she is the child of The Light and The Dark and she is destined to join the four worlds of water, air, fire and earth together.

This is a superb example of a fantasy world created by the author Louise Cusack. Her story telling is spell binding. She will keep you hooked from the very first page of the first book DESTINY OF THE LIGHT from this trilogy. This is a gripping tale about a fantasy land and has a very honorable hero in Pagan. Destiny of the Light by Louise Cusack

Destiny of the Light

DESTINY OF THE LIGHT by Australian author Louise Cusack is book one of a three book trilogy.

It's a fantasy romance weaved at the fantasy land of Ennae. Tallis is the champion to the twin prince and princess. When war broke out he transports them to another world which they know as an illusionary world, Magoria. Which in fact is our Earth.

When the time comes the prince returns and is made the King of Ennae. Now when his twin sister returns later, though twins she is older as time moves faster on our earth than on their world. Tallis falls for our princess, Khatrene. But as her destiny is to give birth to a child who will join the four worlds, she is married to the Dark. It is a saga of forbidden love. Betrayal, honor and family. Tallis is a noble hero. And Khatrene is a strong heroine who was brought up in our world but adapts to life on Ennae and all it's magical powers.

Louise Cusack's superb storytelling makes these characters stand out and the whole story is very visual. I'm looking forward to getting into the second book in this trilogy. As a reader what I love about these series is that though it depicts other fantasy worlds, you are not thrown out of the story by other world languages. The author explains this away by explaining that their mind adapts to our language for them to converse with an Earth being.

DESTINY OF THE LIGHT is an exciting, fantastic, tale which will grip you from the very first page and keep you flipping your ereader pages late into the night!
